When the forest is on fire, nobody looks at the roses. If you are struggling to make ends meet, the whole focus you have is to earn more, so the “if-then” goals take over your passion, autonomy and purpose. Until it changes, your motivation is spoiled, and every talent can be misused or wasted. Therefore, if you care about your team’s motivation, the baseline compensation shall be ‘sufficient and enough’ so that money is not our main concern. The question is when enough is enough? The answer is not so simple; however, the guideline is: the pay must be both internally and externally fair. Internally meaning that people in your team should earn similar for the same job and externally with regards to what they would earn doing the same job in other companies.
