Rewards make us happy?

Rewards are addictive and do not work in the long run. If rewards are given on regular basis, quickly they become a rule and status-quo or a kind of basic need from the Kano model. If taken away, the motivation will collapse, however continuing to give rewards makes the recipient expect more and more to be motivated on the same level. Often, rewards are not linked to performance, but just a given. What if we were given rewards for something that we like doing and then the rewards would stop? Would we stop doing what we like?
